Now beyond just the games themselves, there's certainly tons of other places where chiptunes can be found... in fact, my first experience with chiptunes as a standalone music genre created entirely for the appreciation of the sound was actually the songs I found in keygens/oldschool-styled games such as Lyle in Cube Sector. First song I ever heard like that was "Hybrid Song" or as it's more commonly known, "Funky Stars" by Quazar of Sanxion. Since then, I've actively seeked out more'n more of the stuff as I found that people actually appreciated the music for what it was -- once it was the best they could possibly do with the hardware they had, but now it's sought for the sound it makes all it's own... <3
Anyways, I digress into nonsense.
I've collected a few links to some pretty amazing sources of chiptune music of various style and origin!
Keygen Music - www.keygenmusic.net
One of the biggest sources of .xm, .it, .mod, .sid, .everything -- tons of chiptunes that have appeared in thousands of serial key generators worldwide. I remember back when I was younger, when I used to download key generators (come on, everyone did) I used to always think, "wow, this music's so cool. I wonder why every keygen has to have such awesome music in them~?" -- and it sticks true! There's so much here that it's kinda mind boggling, but don't worry, you can download everything in one big file, so just throw it all in a WinAmp playlist and go to town~ :3
Dubmood- http://razor1911.com/dubmood/
Dubmood is a Swedish chiptune artist that I don't know a whole lot about as a person -- all I know is that he's made a ton of awesome stuff, all available in original .xm/.it/.mo/.whatever format on his website, or .mp3 if you wanna copy it all straight over to an iPod or what-have-you, without having to convert it all first. :3 He's one of the best modenr chiptune-composers I know, and for very good reason~ <3
Plopbox - www.plopbox.net
Plopbox is a java-based website that is a huuuuuge storage of chiptunesi n their original format, and constantly growing help to uploads from their members -- you can use various search functions to find songs based on author, name, popularity, etc. -- rank sogns and create your own playlists with their built in java-applet music player. :3
8bitpeople - http://www.8bitpeoples.com/
This place is a collections of a ton of various chiptune composer's works, like over a hundred of the guys~ Tons of stuff for every taste here, depending on just how hardcore a chiptune fan you are, whether you're a purist or like to see itm ixed up with numerous other genres. l3
Kitsune² (VulpVIBE) -- http://vulpvibe.bandcamp.com/album/kitsune-squaredance
Renardv is a crazy electronic artist who does a variety of genres, and uses a different pseudonym for each genre -- Kitsune² is the name he uses for his chiptune stuff. It's like a mix of Chiptune and Happy Hardcore (but often divulges into a few other combonations) -- it's pretty goddamn awesome, frankly. You have to actually buy his stuff, although he's truthfully not against piracy -- it helps him one way or another. Check out my three favorite songs from this artist (of whom has three Kitsune² albums). Seriously. Do it.
